Bayern Munich lead the race to sign La Liga phenom

It has been a topsy-turvy summer transfer window for Bayern Munich as they lost Florian Wirtz, who is close to joining Liverpool, while Leroy Sane also left the club on a free transfer following a contract dispute.

They have signed Jonathan Tah and Tom Bischof on free transfers, but the majority of the deals will now happen after the Club World Cup.

One of Bayern’s priorities this summer has to be the left flank, and as per reports via transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Bayern have made Athletic Bilbao star Nico Williams their primary target this summer.

The Bavarians have made good progress in securing the signature of the Spain international. They have already held two meetings with his representatives.

However, it is not going to be an easy deal financially for the German champions, who will have to fend off interest from the Premier League to sign Williams. Clubs like Arsenal and Chelsea will be in the mix, and they will put up a fight for the young winger.

While the release clause of €58 million isn’t a big deal for Bayern, there could be difficult negotiations over the 22-year-old’s salary demands.  Athletic Bilbao are reportedly also preparing a new contract with an increased salary to keep him at the club.

Where could Williams end up this summer?

Williams has a growing reputation for his heroics with Spain, where he helped La Roja win the European Championship last year. He has developed a great understanding with Lamine Yamal and continues to be the primary option for Spain on the left flank.

Therefore, clubs like Real Madrid, Arsenal, Chelsea, Barcelona, and now Bayern Munich have shown interest in the 22-year-old.

However, as per reports from Bernabeu Digital, Williams will not join Real Madrid due to sporting reasons and also concerns over game time. Hence, he prefers a move to Bayern Munich or Arsenal.

The 22-year-old was almost on his way out of Bilbao last summer, but he eventually decided to stay for another season. He finished the 2024/25 La Liga campaign with five goals and as many assists in 29 games.

He is someone who is known for his dribbles, progressive carries, crosses and key passes. While his goal output may not be the best but if he moves to Bavaria, playing alongside Jamal Musiala, Michael Olise, and Harry Kane would surely boost his numbers.
