Bayern Munich chief opens up on signing players for ‘Club World Cup’ this summer

Vincent Kompany’s era at Bayern Munich have started on a good note with the Bavarians reclaiming their Bundesliga crown. However, they still need to improve on many areas to become a dominant team in European competitions.

Bayern have been marred with injury concerns and errors in defence, a key area which led to their downfall in the Champions League quarterfinal against Inter Milan.

While they are linked with a couple of defenders heading into the summer transfer window. However, ahead of their Bundesliga clash against Hoffenheim, Bayern director of football, Max Eberl remained tight-lipped when asked about the club’s potential defensive incoming this summer.

“We had so many injuries in defense this season. Alphonso Davies, Josip Stanisic, Hiroki Ito, [Dayot] Upamecano, and [Kim] Min-jae were all injured. I understand the discussion, but it’s impossible to assess the whole thing because our defense never really played together,” Eberl replied.

Eberl also clarified that neither Ito nor Davies will be fit for the upcoming Club World Cup. He also gave an update on whether Bayern are looking to sign defenders for the tournament in June.

“Hiroki and Phonzy won’t be at the Club World Cup either. We’ll definitely not sign players just for the Club World Cup, but rather for the perspective,” he added.

Vincent Kompany gives key updates ahead of the Club World Cup

Injuries have been a serious issue at Bayern, and at this point, Upamecano is also out with a knee injury. His participation in the Club World Cup in the USA is doubtful. But Kompany is hopeful that the 26-year-old will make it to the tournament.

“We hope he makes it. If his recovery continues as it is, he should be there. He’ll hopefully be fit and be able to help us,” Kompany revealed.

As per reports, Bayern Munich are also advancing in their contract renewal talks with the French defender. Eberl also gave nothing away on the issue. The Bundesliga champions are reportedly offering Upamecano a contract until 2030.

The Bavarians are low in depth in defence heading into the Club World Cup. On top of that, Eric Dier denied contract renewal and has joined AS Monaco on a free transfer. However, Bayern are trying to convince him to play the Club World Cup before moving to France.

“We’ll figure things out calmly. Obviously we want him at the Club World Cup, but we’ll talk to Eric and then see if we can find a solution,” Eberl shared.

As per Dier’s contract with Monaco, Bayern will be unable to use him in the latter stages of the Club World Cup. So to keep the Englishman throughout the tournament, they would have to negotiate with the Ligue 1 outfit.
