Bayern Munich have endured a frustrating summer transfer window, missing out on several transfer targets, before eventually securing the services of Luis Diaz from Liverpool.
However, there has been some criticism around the Colombian’s move to Bavaria after the Bundesliga champions paid out a whopping €70m [$81m] to sign him.
Fan questions on social media have focused on the club’s willingness to spend so heavily on Diaz, who turns 29 in January.
Despite Diaz’s quality and importance, shown via his key role in helping Liverpool win the Premier League title last season, some supporters believe it’s a short-sighted approach from the Bavarians.
Upon hearing this negativity, Bayern Munich director of sport Maximilian Eberl has backed Diaz, stating age is just one of the few aspects that was put into consideration by the club.
“Our goal must be to have a good mix of players in the squad in terms of age structure. Ultimately, we simply need quality. Age is just one of 10-15 factors that play a role in a transfer,” Eberl told Kicker.

“Lucho has everything we need. We want pace, goals, assists, quality in 1v1 situations, and a high level of availability, meaning as many appearances as possible.”
Diaz will fill the void left by Leroy Sane, who joined Galatasaray after his contract ran out this summer.
What can Luis Diaz offer Bayern Munich?
As Eberl suggests, Bayern Munich have struggled with missed opportunities and wastefulness in front of goal in the past few seasons, and therefore Diaz was preferred over other options.
The 28-year-old netted 17 goals and provided five assists last season with 13 of those coming in the Premier League.
As per Fbref, Diaz averaged 4.34 shot-creating actions, 2.17 successful take-ons, 6.18 touches in attacking positions and received 11.02 progressive passes per 90 minutes last season.
It was a sensational season for Diaz as his maximum goal output in a campaign to date.
Vincent Kompany will hope the former Porto winger replicates that form in 2025/26.
Diaz made his unofficial club debut on August 3, against Lyon in a preseason friendly, where the German champions won 2-1 and Diaz created a couple of openings before missing a late 1v1 opportunity for a first goal.
