Barcelona are the champions of Spain once again.
The Catalans were confirmed as winners of La Liga following their victory over local rivals Espanyol on May 15.
It had looked as though Barca would claim the title before taking to the field, but a last-second goal from Jacobo Ramon gave Real Madrid a 2-1 win over Mallorca a day earlier to keep their title defence just about alive.
However, Barca’s victory over Espanyol means their lead at the top of the standings is unassailable with two games left to play.

In truth, the Catalans have long had the title race under their control, and their thrilling 4-3 Clasico win over Madrid the matchday before proved decisive. After that loss, Madrid would have had to win all their remaining games and hope Barcelona dropped points in each of their final three matches.
The injury-hit Blancos battled gamely to a win over Mallorca to keep the race just about alive, but Barca got the job done 24 hours later.

Madrid won the UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Intercontinental Cup, but the biggest prizes eluded them during what has proved to be Carlo Ancelotti’s final season in charge.
