Barcelona to battle Man United for Serie A defender after shock release clause reveal

Barcelona have made moves with caution in the last few transfer windows, and this summer isn’t any different.

The Catalans have only wrapped up the deal of Joan Garcia from Espanyol, as they desperately needed a new goalkeeper this summer.

They are also keen on signing Athletic Bilbao star Nico Williams, but currently, the transfer has come to a standstill with Williams’ agent demanding registration guarantees.

Amid such tensions, the Catalans have shown interest towards Inter Milan defender Denzel Dumfries, as per reports via SPORT.

Manchester United are another club interested in the Dutch right-back, but Barcelona are confident of securing his services after he was offered to the club by his superagent, Jorge Mendes.

Mendes informed Barcelona that his client has a €25m ($29m) release clause valid until July 15. It sparked an interest in Camp Nou as Hansi Flick admires the player.

Dumfries played a big role in helping Inter Milan reach the Champions League final last season, where they lost to PSG. However, after Simone Inzaghi’s departure to Al Hilal, plenty of players are linked with a move out of Italy.

Where could Dumfries end up this summer?

Dumfries is reportedly eager to move to Barcelona, but it remains to be seen if the Catalans manage to fix their financial issues before making a move for the Dutchman in time.

Dumfries could be available even after July 15, but his price is expected to rise slightly.

Signing a new right-back wasn’t amongst Barcelona’s top priorities, but considering Flick’s admiration and the overall value of the deal, the Catalans are firmly interested in landing Dumfries.

He finished the 2024/25 season with 11 goals and six assists in 45 appearances across competitions. Dumfries’ style of play perfectly suits Flick’s philosophy at Camp Nou.

Flick reportedly wanted a specialist right back who could bring physicality, experience and depth and stability to the position. Dumfries fits the bill on most of the criteria.
