Barcelona star to miss next La Liga clash ahead of Champions League opener against Newcastle

Barcelona are set to return to La Liga action with their match against Valencia on September 14, with the venue yet to be confirmed.

The Catalan club stands fourth in the La Liga table with seven points in three matches. Now, reports have suggested that Barcelona will be missing another of their stars in the midfield in their upcoming fourth league game of the campaign.

Barcelona currently have three players sidelined with injuries, including Spanish midfielder Gavi, who suffered a setback with discomfort in his right knee following a recent knock during training. Reports have suggested that the 21-year-old’s new issue is on the same knee that underwent surgery for a torn ACL in 2023.

Gavi had to miss Barcelona’s last league match and was ruled out of the Spain national squad for the recent World Cup qualifiers.

Now, Frenkie de Jong is reportedly set to miss Barca’s clash against Valencia this week as per head coach Hansi Flick’s decision.

Why will Frenkie de Jong reportedly miss Barcelona’s next La Liga match?

After the recent international break, De Jong has returned to Barcelona with a gluteal injury that he sustained in Netherlands’ clash against Poland last week, and the Dutch Football Association (KNVB) has sent a medical report to the club.

De Jong was not a part of the Catalan squad’s training and will not be available for their next league game, as per Mundo Deportivo. Flick’s decision to sideline the 28-year-old is reportedly a tactical one to ensure his availability for their upcoming Champions League opener.

After their match against Valencia, Flick & Co. are set to make the trip to St. James’ Park to face Newcastle United in their first game of the Champions League this season on September 18.
