Barcelona star joins AS Monaco with one key clause

Ansu Fati once looked like Barcelona’s future, when the then 16-year-old lit up Camp Nou in 2019 with electric feet and fearless instincts.

But six years and several injuries later, the Spanish winger is heading to AS Monaco on loan for the 2025–26 season, hoping to revive a career that never truly took off after his explosive debut.

Barcelona confirmed the move, along with a contract extension that ties Fati to the club until 2028.

Monaco have the option to make the deal permanent next summer for €11m [$13m]. Crucially, Barca has added a buy-back clause, keeping the door open for a return if Fati blossoms in Ligue 1.

The 22-year-old was barely featured under Hansi Flick last season, making just 11 appearances with only three starts.

That’s a long fall for someone who, at 17 years and 40 days, became the youngest player to score in the Champions League – a record that still stands with Lamine Yamal trailing by 28 days.

Monaco’s Champions League return gives Fati a platform

Now joining a Monaco squad that has qualified for the Champions League, Fati will have a rare chance to exhibit his talent on a continental stage, potentially alongside Paul Pogba, whose experience could prove vital in mentoring the young Spaniard.

The French side, on the other hand, will use this season to assess him in Ligue 1 and Europe, weighing a permanent move next summer.
