The post-season period has reopened speculation over Frenkie de Jong’s future at Barcelona with the Dutch midfielder missing a chunk of the 2024/25 campaign due to ankle injury.
However, despite the ongoing rumours, De Jong has looked to clarify his stance in a recent interview with Voetbal Zone via SPORT.
The 28-year-old’s current contract with La Blaugrana runs until June 2026, but extension talks have not progressed, despite De Jong’s keeness to stay in Catalonia.
“I think I’m going to renew at Barca. I can’t be 100% sure, but if everything goes well, it will be done. My intention is to renew this summer, but we’ll see what happens. It’s a negotiation and you can’t say when. The important thing is both parties want it and I think we will reach an agreement,” he told VZ.
As per previous reports, De Jong is also looking to disassociate himself from his current agent, Ali Dursun, who has been a major obstacle between him and Barcelona in terms of reaching agreements in the past.
However, when he was asked about the issue, De Jong remained tight lipped. “I can’t talk about my agent. I can’t say anything about that now. Right now, I’m focused on the national team, and then we’ll see.”

What did Joan Laporta say on De Jong’s future?
At the start of 2025, De Jong was flagged as one of the players Barcelona were willing to sell However, things took a massive U-turn due to his recent performances for Hansi Flick – as a vital figure in the German’s system – and the former Bayern Munich boss wants him to stay at the club.
Barcelona president Joan Laporta has since offered an update on the contract situations of several players, and he revealed his intention to keep De Jong at the club, after praising ex-Ajax playmaker.
“I think he’s having a good time. Even when you don’t win, people have a worse time, and he also had an ankle injury. He needs to be 100% fit. He’s a player who runs a lot, with a lot of courage, who sets the pace of games,” Laporta told Mundo Deportivo.
“Now he’s recovered, we’re working on that contract renovation. He’s very excited, we’re determined to do whatever is necessary to keep him. He’s fixing some of his things, personal, professional, and when this is ready, we will be able to announce his continuation.”
De Jong featured in 46 matches for Barcelona last season, including 26 in La Liga with a couple of goals and assists. He provides great solidity in midfield and is a fulcrum in Flick’s set up.
