Barcelona could launch a bold move to sign Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey this summer despite Gunners boss Mikel Arteta calling for the Ghana international to stay.
The potential move, as reported by The Sun, comes as Partey enters the final month of his contract.
The midfielder played a key role in Arsenal’s Premier League title push and Champions League semifinal run in the 2024/25 season.
He featured in 52 games across all competitions, and despite Arsenal’s failure to win silverware, Arteta described his form as ‘exceptional’.
When asked about Partey future at the end of the campaign Arteta said, “I think consistency-wise it’s been his best season. The way he’s played and his availability has been exceptional, and he’s a really important player for us.”
However, contract renewal talks have stalled, and with no extension in place, Partey’s agents have opened talks with Barcelona – who are looking for a free transfer due to their ongoing financial limitations.

Head coach Hansi Flick is rumoured to be a strong admirer of Partey and has personally approved the move.
If Partey leaves, it will be a big blow for Arsenal. The former Atletico Madrid star, has made 167 appearances for the Gunners, and he plays a key part in Arteta’s system – strong in possession, quick in recovery and a calming presence in midfield since arriving in 2021 from Madrid in a £45m [$60m] deal.
Barcelona, working under tight budget limits, view Partey as a smart low-cost veteran signing that compliments their young midfield talents.
With Jorginho gone, and Real Sociedad star Martin Zubimendi set to arrive, Arsenal want Partey to stay – but the verdict remains unclear.
Clubs in the Saudi Pro League – alongside Juventus, Besiktas, and Atletico Madrid have also shown interest – but Barca have the current edge.
