Barcelona adds another name to injury list after Clasico defeat

Barcelona suffered a 2-1 defeat against Real Madrid in the first Clasico of the campaign on October 26 at Santiago Bernabeu.

After Kylian Mbappe opened the scoring for Real Madrid from an assist by Jude Bellingham in the 22nd minute, Fermin Lopez netted the equalizer for Barca after being set up by Marcus Rashford in the 38th minute.

Bellingham then took the lead for the hosts from an assist by Eder Militao in the 43rd minute. Barcelona, however, were unable to find the back of the net again on Sunday, concluding the match with a victory for Los Blancos.

The eventful Clasico also saw Pedri being sent off after picking up a second yellow card in the concluding minutes of the second half stoppage time, leading to him being ruled out of Barcelona’s upcoming La Liga clash due to suspension.

However, it appears that Pedri would be missing in action for a longer while than that, as a recent update from the Catalan club has suggested that the Spanish midfielder is the new addition to Barca’s long list of injuries.

How long is Barcelona’s Pedri expected to be sidelined?

Pedri, who appeared to be fatigued during the Clasico, was reportedly unable to train with the squad the next morning and worked in the gym as medical staff assessed the extent of his issue.

Barcelona have now released an official statement about Pedri’s injury. It read,

“The first team player Pedri has suffered a tear in the distal biceps femoris muscle in his left thigh. The player’s recovery will dictate his return to action.”

Barca already have several key players sidelined with injuries, including Gavi, Raphinha, Joan Garcia, and Marc-Andre ter Stegen. Robert Lewandowski and Dani Olmo, who were also on their list of absentees, have only recently returned to training.

Pedri has been a key and consistent player for Barcelona, missing only one game so far under head coach Hansi Flick, who took charge in May last year. The 22-year-old star’s absence adds to the German manager’s worries ahead of the Blaugrana’s crucial upcoming matches.

According to a report by Diario AS, Pedri could be sidelined for up to three weeks through the international break, possibly missing Barcelona’s next Champions League match against Club Brugge on November 5.

Barcelona, meanwhile, are set to host Elche at Lluis Companys Olympic Stadium on November 2. The Catalans are currently second in the top flight, with a five-point difference from table toppers Real Madrid, and will be hoping to close the gap in their upcoming games.
