Atletico Madrid vs. Barcelona score: Copa del Rey result, stats as Ferran Torres leads nervy Barcelona to final

In a game that featured far fewer fireworks and far more venom than last time around, Ferran Torres bagged the decisive goal as Barcelona topped Atletico Madrid 1-0, securing a spot in the Copa del Rey finals via a 5-4 aggregate victory.

The 4-4 first leg thriller was a distant memory as these two sides slugged out 90 minutes at the Metropolitano. Atletico Madrid appeared more interested in picking up yellow cards than creating goalscoring chances, at least through the first half, as four of Diego Simeone’s players were booked before halftime.

Instead, it was Torres who made his mark, picking up a brilliant bit of play from Lamine Yamal and depositing the ball in the back of the net decisively.

Atletico Madrid had little to offer from there, in truth. Barcelona nervously saw out the rest of the match, as they were never truly troubled at any point from then on. The only moment of hope for Atleti was when substitute Alexander Sorloth, their late hero in the first leg, put the ball in the back of the net midway through the second half, but the moment was nullified for offside.

The only moment of concern in this one for Barcelona was when Lamine Yamal looked to pick up a knock early in the second half, but he stayed on the pitch until the 87th minute. While he appeared to be okay, he failed to have much influence on the match through the second half and his fitness will have to be checked moving forward.

Real Madrid await their El Clasico rivals in the final after they defeated Real Sociedad in another thriller yesterday.

Atletico Madrid vs. Barcelona live updates, highlights from Copa del Rey

FULLTIME: Atletico Madrid 0-1 Barcelona

The full-time whistle goes and Barcelona are through to the Copa del Rey final, where they will face their El Clasico rivals Real Madrid!

90+3 min: With very little time left, Gerard Martin finds himself booked to give away a dangerous free kick from outside the top-right corner of the penalty area.

Here comes the goalkeeper up for the set-piece! The home fans love it. Rodrigo de Paul’s delivery is on a platter to the far post, but it’s defended well and cleared. Atleti recycle the ball and get it to a dangerous position in front of goal, but Barcelona manage to thump it clear.

89th min: Both sides are working hard on the ball in the attacking third, but there’s been very little for either side to savor. Barcelona have no reason to unload the arsenal, while Atletico Madrid haven’t had the quality necessary to break down the opponent, even when opening themselves up. This match looks to be coming to a quiet end…

Four minutes of added time are shown, which feel like a paltry amount with which to work.

80th min: Antoine Griezmann’s last action is to deliver a cross that’s held by a diving Wojciech Szczesny, and his night is complete as he’s replaced by Riquelme in Atletico Madrid’s final substitution of regulation. The 34-year-old was largely invisible throughout this match, suggesting his time as a world-class footballer may be nearing an end.

73rd min: Atletico Madrid are beginning to open themselves up a bit more, largely out of necessity given the scoreline. It’s been far from pretty, but they are causing Barcelona some problems…Diego Simeone has just one more substitution to work with the rest of regulation.

The lone goal scorer Ferran Torres comes off for Barcelona, replaced by the illustrious Robert Lewandowski.

69th min: Chance, Atletico Madrid! ALEXANDER SORLOTH HAS THE BALL IN THE NET…BUT IT’S OFFSIDE! The flag goes up as Atletico Madrid strike on the long-ball counter, and a replay shows it was the correct decision, if only just! Barcelona have got to be careful, because that’s the danger Atleti present!

68th min: Alex Balde is booked for sending Nahuel Molina tumbling. It was an awkward challenge, if not a terribly dangerous one, as he went sliding along the ground for a long time.

This game has devolved quite a bit, as every foul is jeered by the home fans and the players are up in arms every time. The referee is doing his best to keep a lid on things, but it feels as if his hard-line stance earlier in the match is coming back to bite him a bit when he lets certain things go.

60th min: Nahuel Molina has hardly been on the field a full minute and he picks up a booking for a hard foul on Eric Garica, who’s also just onto the pitch. It’s a bad challenge, as he comes flying in and gets a piece of the ball but also a piece of Garcia’s foot with his studs.

The Barcelona defender is down for some time while receiving treatment, but appears ready to continue after a time.

58th min: Barcelona have a real problem here as Lamine Yamal is limping around the pitch and could be in danger of needing to be brought off. He was crunched at the end of the previous chance upon laying off the ball to Raphinha, and has clearly taken a blow.

Yet when Hansi Flick tells his players to warm up, the youngster gives him a big finger wag, telling the boss that he’s fine to continue.

Instead, Pau Cubarsi is withdrawn and replaced by Ronald Araujo, while Fermin Lopez is withdrawn and replaced by Eric Garcia. The latter is likely to enter midfield in what appears to be a defensive switch. Atletico Madrid also make one more change, as Nahuel Molina replaces Robin Le Normand, suggesting a change of shape to a back four.

55th min: Chance, Barcelona! A great chance falls to Raphinha on the left as Atleti get sliced to bits by Lamine Yamal yet again, but he scuffs the effort and it’s a simple save for Juan Musso at the near post! He’s got a big chance to score there, but the finish isn’t up to snuff!

53rd min: Chance, Atletico Madrid! ALEXANDER SORLOTH WITH A BIG MISS! He is clean through on goal, but fires his shot into the side netting! He’s got to hit the target there! What a let-off for the Barcelona high line!

51st min: Atletico Madrid have started this half very bright, holding most of the attacking possession. They have Barcelona pinned back a bit, but a cleared corner relieves the pressure a bit and forces Atleti to play it all the way back to their goalkeeper.

48th min: Chance, Atletico Madrid! Alexander Sorloth is free down the right and feeds a perfect cutback to Antoine Griezmann in acres of space on the penalty spot, but his shot is extremely poor, directed straight at Wojciech Szczesny with no accuracy or pace!

In the end, the offside flag nullifies the chance regardless, as Sorloth was just leaning over the line on his run, but it’s still a strong save by the Barcelona goalkeeper!

2nd half kickoff: The second half is under way as Diego Simeone makes a sensational triple change. Coming off are Reinildo, Cesar Azpilicueta, and Giuliano Simeone, while Alexander Sorloth, Clement Lenglet, and Javi Galan enter.

The two withdrawn defenders are not surprising, as they were both booked, but the exit of Simeone is surprising as he was strong in the first leg and had a few moments here in the first 45 minutes. Sorloth, of course, scored the dramatic late equaliser in the first leg.

HALFTIME: Atletico Madrid 0-1 Barcelona

With a number of players looking cagey while playing on a yellow card, the final 10 minutes of the half were without much aplomb, as Barcelona take their one-goal lead into the break. Lamine Yamal was unquestionably the best player in that first 45 minutes, as he and Raphinha combined to draw at least three of Atleti’s four bookings.

The visitors have absolutely been good for their lead, but the lead is silm and unquestionably at risk against this Atletico Madrid side that can strike at any moment, even in games like this where they’ve had little to nothing up front.

45+4 min: Atletico Madrid are furious that the referee has not whistled for a foul as they go long for Giuliano Simone, who gets pummeled by one defender into the legs of another. It sure looked a dicey one…Barcelona will feel lucky to get away with that one.

45+3 min: Julian Alvarez picks up an unnecessary booking just before the break, as he yanks on the back of Lamine Yamal’s shirt.

35th min: Frenkie de Jong is shown Barcelona’s first yellow card of this testy match and fourth overall as he stomps on Rodrigo de Paul’s foot. There’s no intent in that one at all but he’s just a bit late to the challenge and leaves the Argentine in a heap.

31st min: Reinildo is booked for wrestling Lamine Yamal off the ball. When the referee shows him the card, the Atletico Madrid defender squares up to the official and has strong words, but the referee stands his ground and leaves his arm emphatically in the air. The defender has to be careful to keep his cool!

29th min: Chance, Barcelona! A mad scramble in the Atletico Madrid penalty area sees Pedri underhit a square pass for Raphinha right at the final moment, before a shot is cannoned miles over the crossbar!

That surely has to be a goal, as Lamine Yamal skinned Reinildo before feeding a delicious vertical ball through for Pedri, but his tap to Raphinha is way too light. A poor end to a beautiful move!

27th min: GOAL! BARCELONA! Ferran Torres goes clean through on goal from a Lamine Yamal pass, and he puts Barcelona in front just before the hour mark!

A beautiful diagonal ball from Lamine Yamal is fed through from the top-right corner of the penalty area, and it takes just one touch for “The Shark” to tap it past Juan Musso and into the back of the net!

19th min: Chance, Barcelona! An absolutely beautiful one-touch passing move from Barcelona pings the ball deftly through the Atletico Madrid block, but Ferran Torres is dispossessed right as he goes to unleash a shot at the end of it! What a gorgeous buildup from the visitors, who shred the Atleti setup, but Torres is tackled from behind right as he goes to finish it off!

13th min: Another yellow card is produced, this time for Rodrigo de Paul, who goes in late to a 50/50 challenge with Raphinha and stamps on the Brazilian’s ankle. Another deserved booking for an Atleti player early in this game, who may be a little overcharged to start the match.

8th min: Well now…how about this? There’s a VAR check of the Azpilicueta tackle, as he’s been told to go have a look at the monitor. He comes back after a long look, and sticks with his initial decision!

That appears to be the correct call. While Azpilicueta’s foot does come up high on the back of Raphinha’s leg, it results in just a glancing blow and there’s very little contact in the end. Good for the referee for sticking with his initial decision!

6th min: There has been a flurry of action early on both ends, but no team has been able to test the goalkeeper just yet.

Cesar Azpilicueta is booked early on after he takes down Raphinha from behind. It angers the former Chelsea man who is incensed with the decision.

Kickoff: They’re under way in Madrid!

Atletico Madrid vs. Barcelona: Pre-match commentary, analysis, more

15 minutes to kickoff: The players are ready to go! Are you?

30 minutes to kickoff: Raphinha has a lot to prove today and the rest of the season. We have the Brazilian as the current frontrunner for the Ballon d’Or, but he has a lot of challengers hot on his heels. The poor performance against Argentina this past international break has hurt his stock some, and he has to carry Barcelona as far as he can in a number of competitions to remind fans of his candidacy.

45 minutes to kickoff: Diego Simeone has gone with a formational switch to try and keep a lid on this match, and give Atleti a chance to protect any lead they potentially snatch. It feels like he’s frustrated with Atleti’s potential to play into the favored style of their opponents rather than asserting their own influence on the match. Can they grind down this game to play their way, or will Barcelona make it another track meet?

1 hour to kickoff: Lineups are in! For Barcelona, there’s no surprises, with Raphinha finally returning to the XI. With Dani Olmo out injured, Fermin Lopez gets the nod at the No. 10 ahead of Gavi.

The Atletico Madrid is the more interesting one, with Diego Simeone making a number of surprising changes. Most notably, veteran goalkeeper Jan Oblak does NOT start, despite this being maybe their most important match of the rest of the season. Instead, it’s Juan Musso who keeps his place as the Copa del Rey goalkeeper.

Also interestingly, Simeone has gone with an extra defender today, adding Cesar Azpilicueta to the lineup while sacrificing a midfielder in Conor Gallagher.

1 hour 15 mins to kick: The two goals for Atletico Madrid in the first six minutes of the first leg was their first time doing so since 2017. Can they punch Barcelona in the mouth early again today to give them a big advantage?

1 hour 30 mins to kick: With Atletico Madrid now out of the Champions League in heartbreaking fashion and nine points back in the La Liga title race, it feels like this is Atleti’s last chance to snatch something from this season.

According to the CBS Sports crew, their season is “over” if they are eliminated today. Do you agree?

1 hour 45 mins to kick: Given how wild the last two matches between these two teams have been, we’re expecting even more goals today.

You can read my preview of the match here with predictions and picks, and check out my spot on SportsGrid earlier today discussing the game.

2 hours to kickoff: Raphinha was rested for both of Barcelona’s last two games coming out of the March international break. The Brazilian struggled against international rivals Argentina in a heavy defeat, and may have needed some time to rest up for a big stretch run.

It will be interesting to see what a rested Raphinha has in the tank over the next two months, as he not only pushes for trophies on the club level but also the Ballon d’Or on an individual level. He’s ready to go for this match today.

Atletico Madrid vs. Barcelona lineups, team news

Robin Le Normand went off after a nasty clash of heads in last weekend’s draw with Espanyol. Atleti said later that they had no concerns over possible longer-term damage, but it’s still a surprise that the defender is involved today in the XI. Alongside him, Jose Maria Gimenez gets the nod as he did in the first leg, leaving Clement Lenglet on the bench.

Otherwise, the team is likely to be very similar to the one that lost to Barca in La Liga just before the international break. In the most notable change, Conor Gallagher is left out as Diego Simeone opts for an extra defender in Cesar Azpilicueta.

In goal, Juan Musso keeps his place as Copa del Rey starter over regular Juan Oblak, despite the importance of this match relative to the rest of their fixtures this season.

Atletico Madrid starting lineup (5-3-2): Musso (GK) — Llorente, Azpilicueta, Gimenez, Lenglet, Reinildo — Simeone, De Paul, Barrios — Griezmann, Alvarez.

Atletico Madrid subs (11): Oblak (GK), Galan, Molina, Lenglet, Witsel, Gallagher, Koke, Lemar, Lino, Riquelme, Sorloth.

Barca have Raphinha in the starting lineup again, back in from the off for the first time since the international break ended. The Brazilian sat out the wins over Osasuna and Girona last week, with coach Flick preferring to rest him after his return from World Cup qualifying duty.

Dani Olmo has an adductor injury that will likely keep him out for three weeks, seeing Fermin Lopez start over Gavi as the No. 10, deployed in front of Pedri and Frenkie de JongAlex Balde and Pau Cubarsi return to the lineup in defence.

Goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen trained with the squad on Monday for the first time since suffering a serious knee injury last September, but he is not expected to supplant Wojciech Szczesny for some time.

Barcelona starting lineup (4-2-3-1): Szczesny (GK) — Kounde, Cubarsi, I. Martinez, Balde — Pedri, De Jong — Lamine Yamal, F. Lopez, Raphinha — F. Torres.

Barcelona subs (11): Pena (GK), Kochen (GK), Fort, E. Garcia, Araujo, Victor, Torre, Gavi, Fati, Martin, Lewandowski.
