Atletico Madrid in talks to bring eighth summer signing

According to transfer specialist and journalist Fabrizio Romano, Atletico Madrid have begun talks with Juventus to buy Argentinean winger Nicolas Gonzalez from Juventus.

This would make the eighth summer signing for Atletico Madrid and depending on the fee, could bring their summer spending to almost 200 million euros.

The signing itself would be a bit confusing though as Atletico aren’t short on attacking talent as they have Antoine Griezmann, Julian Alvarez, Alexander Sorloth, Alex Baena, Giacomo Raspadori, Guliano Simeone, and Thiago Almada.

The player himself is decent but wouldn’t displace any player for their starting spot and would be more depth than anything else.

He does fit the Simeone mold of a scrappy, hardworking, South American player that will give his all on the pitch but it’s still a strange signing considering the need for centre backs on the team.

Still, it’s interesting how Atletico’s summer has gone as they seem to be gearing towards being more of an attacking team compared to the stereotypical Simeone defensive team that fans have been accustomed to.

He did show to be more of an offensive team last year, but still kept his pragmatic style against Real Madrid and Barcelona.

We will see if he continues to do the same thing as last season or if Simeone is slowly integrating a more offensive evolution of his tactics and squad.

For Atletico fans, there should be excitement that the club seems to be ambitious right now and willing to spend money to improve the team. There may be concern on whether they are bringing the right players but their spending should show that they are still committed to winning.
