Lawrence Butler is thinking his future into existence, one iPhone reminder at a time.
The rising star for the Athletics, formerly of Oakland but slated to play this season in Sacramento, slugged 22 home runs in 125 games as a 23-year old last season, and he’s expected to be a leading member of this new era of A’s baseball.
Butler has one goal clear in his mind: to be an MLB All-Star. And he’s got his phone letting him know about it every day, he recently revealed in an MLB social media video.
Every day at 1 p.m., these words pop up on Butler’s phone: “ASG ATL 2025 NO MATTER WHAT !! (demon face emoji).”

The All-Star Game, which will be hosted by the Braves, could be especially cool for Butler, who attended Westlake High School in Atlanta.
“If I ever feel like I don’t wanna do something, I look at it and be like, ‘You gotta go, so go do it,'” Butler said.
Butler is currently projected to lead off this season for the Athletics. Fangraphs projects him to hit 26 home runs, and he’s a popular fantasy baseball selection due to his upside as a young, left-handed, power-speed threat.
He may be even more popular now after sharing the secret to his self-motivation, something that maybe we all should try with our own specific kind of daily reminder.
