The Houston Astros have been without a lot of their key pieces in the pitching staff and in the lineup for various amounts of time this season.
One of the most important absences has been Yordan Alvarez, who has been out for the majority of the year. But recently, he went down to Double-A to get a rehab start, and had a productive first rehab start.
After his first rehab start, Alvarez spoke with reporters and shared an encouraging update on his recovery. Rey Castillo, reporter for the Caller-Times, shared the comments from Alvarez, which were very encouraging.
Alvarez is Making Progress
Alvarez went 2-4 with a double, a single, and a walk in an overall positive rehab start. He also stole a base, making a strong day overall for the Astros veteran slugger.
“Feels really good,” Alvarez said through an interpreter. “It’s been one heck of a year, especially dealing with this injury and stuff, but I am very thankful that I am getting to the point where I’m at.”
Astros’ Yordan Alvarez, via interpreter Cassie Reyna, said his hand feels good and he’s growing more comfortable each at-bat, even fouling off pitches. This sentiment, that Alvarez “feels good,” was something he also repeated later in his comments. “This felt really good,” Alvarez said through an interpreter.
Seeing positive progress for Alvarez is a great sign, and these comments indicate that the 28-year-old slugger is back on track to recover from his hand injury.

Before hitting the injured list this season, Alvarez had a .210 batting average in 100 at-bats with three home runs, 18 RBIs, four doubles, seven runs scored, and an OPS of .646 in 29 games this season.
He hasn’t suited up for the Astros since early May, and his potential return could be a huge boost for the Astros down the stretch as they look to win the AL West over the Seattle Mariners.
