Despite getting off to a slow start to kick off the 2025 season, the Houston Astros have turned things around. They currently hold a two-game lead in the American League West over the Seattle Mariners.
Offense has been great for the club this season. They hold a team batting average of .253, which ranks them sixth across Major League Baseball. That is quite impressive when you look back at all the injuries the team has gone through thus far.
While some teams could have trouble replacing key players who are on the IL, Houston has one man who can nearly play every position, and that player is Mauricio Dubon. Dubon has bounced around the field this year, helping the Astros fill holes as needed. His versatile play impressed The Athletic’s Jim Bowden, who pencils him in as the club’s most overlooked player.
“The versatile Dubon has been indispensable for the Astros, who have dealt with injuries all over the field. This season, he’s played 34 games at second base, 22 at shortstop, 22 at third base, 13 in left field, six in center field, two in right field, and three at first base.”
Mauricio Dubon has been doing it with the bat as well
While Mauricio Dubon has been a big help in the field, he is also getting it done offensively. Batting toward the end of the lineup, he has been seeing the ball well this year.
In 103 games, he is hitting .258/.302/.390 with 18 doubles, seven home runs, and 28 runs batted in. The slugger is just four homers away from breaking his single-season home run record from 2023.
