Astros targeting All-Star DH at trade deadline, according to MLB insider

The Houston Astros have a clear need at the deadline, and it’s to bring in a left-handed hitter. Whether they’re an outfielder or second baseman, the Astros need to make such an addition at the deadline.

According to MLB insider Robert Murray of Fansided.com, the Astros are targeting an All-Star starter from this season to fill such a need.

“Houston Astros targeting offense, Ryan O’Hearn at trade deadline.” Murray wrote. “The Houston Astros are prioritizing offense at the trade deadline, and one fit is Baltimore Orioles All-Star slugger Ryan O’Hearn.”

With the Astros in need of an offensive upgrade, especially amid all of their injuries, O’Hearn would be a great option. He’s reasonably priced, as he’s set to hit free agency at the end of the year.

Also, he can play left field, first base, or be a designated hitter for the team when needed. Houston needs to add a left-handed batter, and O’Hearn would be one of the best available at the deadline.

He’s hitting .281 this season with a .827 OPS and a 135 OPS+. Through 89 games, he has 82 hits, 14 doubles, 12 home runs, and 37 RBIs. He’s also a patient hitter, walking 41 times and striking out 56 times.

This season has been O’Hearn’s best in his eight-year big league career. At 31 years old, about to hit 32 years old on July 26th, O’Hearn is a veteran who could slide into the lineup and be a solid slugger for the Astros.

Whether it’s in the outfield or at designated hitter, O’Hearn would be a much-needed left-handed bat in the lineup for Houston. He’d provide an immediate spark to the offense and help the Astros contend for a World Series in 2025.
