The Houston Astros acquired Jesus Sanchez in a trade with the Miami Marlins ahead of the trade deadline. He was brought in to address their need for a left-handed hitting outfielder, especially with Yordan Alvarez on the IL, dealing with a fractured right hand.
Sanchez did well at the plate in his first few games, but that has not been the case lately. He is currently in the middle of a big-time slump where he has now gone 24 at-bats without a hit after Monday’s huge loss to the Detroit Tigers.
This slump is weighing on Sanchez’s mind. He is trying desperately to figure his way out of this mess while keeping a level head about the situation, via the Houston Chronicle’s Matt Kawahara.
“I’m trying to find myself,” said Sanchez. “But you’ve got to keep your head high and try to get some good at-bats.”
Astros’ manager Joe Espada has faith in Jesus Sanchez
Houston manager Joe Espada understands his slugger is in the middle of a slump. However, he has faith that Sanchez can dig himself out of this.
“We acquired him to play,” said Espada. “And we believe in his bat. He’s a really good hitter. It’s just helping him through that weirdness that he’s talking about. Trying to make him comfortable, trying not to (have it feel like he has to be the hero every night. He’s part of a really good lineup. Just relax and be you.”
Sanchez will be sitting out Tuesday’s game against the Tigers with LHP Tarik Skubal expected to start for Detroit.
