Maybe the Baltimore Orioles liked what they saw?
In the past 11 days, Astros reliever Shawn Dubin faced the Orioles three times. And today, he was claimed off waivers by Baltimore after Houston designated him for assignment on Aug. 23, the Astros announced.
Dubin certainly didn’t impress in those three games vs. Baltimore, allowing nine earned runs over four innings. But the 29-year-old did show his potential early in the season.

Dubin headed to Baltimore
Through late June, Dubin couldn’t be touched. His 1.33 ERA over 18 games coincided with two wins and six holds. He was having a breakout year after struggling for much of his first two seasons in the major leagues.
But an injury followed by five horrific games in August was all it took for the Astros to move on. Dubin was placed on the 15-day injured list with a right forearm strain on June 24, and after he was activated on Aug. 12, Dubin allowed 13 earned runs over his next five appearances for a 21.94 ERA.
Baltimore surely hopes it can help Dubin regain his first-half dominance, especially because the Orioles bullpen currently ranks 25th in ERA (4.66) in MLB.
Dubin was originally a 13th-round pick by the Astros in the 2018 Draft. He made his debut during the 2023 season and then appeared in 31 games the next year, where he went 1-1 with a 4.17 ERA.
But now he’s headed to Baltimore, while the Astros focus on their three-game series that begins tonight against the Colorado Rockies at Daikin Park.
