Astros’ Joe Espada drops possible return date for Yordan Alvarez

The Houston Astros are arguably one of the most injury-plagued teams in the MLB as the regular season heads into its final week of August.

In just this month alone, the Astros have placed players, including Josh Hader, Taylor Trammell, and Bennett Sousa, on the injured list. They joined a large list of recovering players for Houston.

One of their top names that hasn’t been available for the majority of 2025 has been Yordan Alvarez, as he has been recovering from a fractured right hand since May 5.

Joe Espada: ‘strong possibility’ Yordan Alvarez returns on Aug. 26

Yordan Alvarez hasn’t been seen in the Astros lineup since early May. He’s been battling back from a right-hand fracture that’s also had a setback, but his return to the big leagues could be sooner rather than later.

He’s set to play in his fourth, and likely final, rehab start on Sunday. If the All-Star is still feeling good after the game, Astros manager Joe Espada believes that he could return as early as Tuesday.

“Presuming Yordan Alvarez comes out of today’s Double-A game feeling good, there is a ‘strong possibility’ he rejoins the Astros during their homestand that starts on Tuesday, Joe Espada said,” The Athletic‘s Chandler Rome wrote.

If the reports hold, Alvarez would return to the Astros with just over a month left in the regular season, giving him time to build momentum before the postseason in October.
