The Houston Astros appear to be longshots to re-sign star third baseman Alex Bregman.
Spring training has officially begun, and the two-time World Series champion remains unsigned. Bregman wants a contract of at least six years, but most teams have not been willing to go that length.
However, Bob Nightengale of USA Today notes that the Astros are one of three teams that have made Bregman a recent offer.
“The Detroit Tigers, Boston Red Sox and the Houston Astros have all made offers of at least four years to Bregman, but no one has been willing to meet his asking price,” Nightengale reported.
With spring training underway, the Bregman sweepstakes will hopefully reach their end soon. This late in the game, the two-time All-Star may be forced to take the same approach Cody Bellinger did last offseason, signing a short-term deal with a high annual value.
If that is what ends up happening, perhaps the Astros still have a chance to bring him back home. General manager Dana Brown recently spoke about Bregman in the past tense, however, and even went as far as to say that the Astros have already lost him.
But if a short-term deal is what he’ll have to take at this point in the offseason, Houston may not be out of the race just yet.
It will certainly be interesting to see how things shake out in the coming weeks, but eventually, Bregman will sign somewhere.
Even if Houston is back in the picture, however, they will face some stiff competition to sign him.
