Astros GM reveals Houston’s trade deadline plans

Houston Astros general manager Dana Brown made an appearance on the team’s pregame radio show ahead of their Sunday afternoon matchup against the Los Angeles Angels. During his appearance, he revealed what the team is doing in the build-up to the trade deadline.

According to a post on Twitter/X from Chandler Rome of The Athletic, Brown and the Astros are planning to target a left-handed bat in the trade market. Not only is their target identified, but they are also already in ongoing negotiations.

“It’s no secret,” Brown said. “It’d be good to get a left-handed bat. No doubt about that. That’s the big thing for us. We’re having discussions about other things, but the one big issue for us, it’d be nice to get a left-handed bat.”

Rarely does a general manager reveal their target so explicitly, but Brown is telling it clearly: the Astros are looking to acquire a left-handed batter. Ideally, that would coincide with a left fielder, but the team is willing to add the left-handed bat elsewhere.

One name to keep in mind as the trade deadline approaches is Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Brandon Marsh. He’s a left-handed bat and can play above-average defense in left field. If the Astros can offer a reliever or other assets, they may be able to pry Marsh out of the Phillies’ hands.

But, whether they add a left field and a left-handed batter at the same time or not, the Astros have a clear target. Not only are they targeting a left-handed batter, but through Brown’s comments, the team is also looking at other areas.

This is great news, not just from the standpoint that the Astros are being active in the trade market, but they are also willing to be buyers. Some experts and analysts pegged the Astros as a team that’d stand pat at the deadline. Instead, based on Browns comments, the team is planning to acquire a much-needed left-handed bat, regardless of their position.
