Astros give updated timeline on star slugger Yordan Alvarez

Houston Astros star slugger Yordan Alvarez will continue his rehab assignment at Double-A Corpus Christi on Sunday as the designated hitter, according to The Athletic’s Chandler Rome.

Alvarez began his rehab assignment on Tuesday and has played in three games for the Hooks.

The Astros’ slugger will get the day off on Saturday, and be back in the lineup on Sunday for his fourth rehab game. Through three games, Alvarez is hitting .455 with three doubles and two walks.

Alvarez’s Return Will Be a Huge Boost For Houston

The Astros’ have been without Alvarez since May 2. The star slugger has been dealing with a lingering hand injury that seemed never-ending. However, his return is in sight now, and could be soon.

Alvarez has five hits in his 11 at-bats with two walks during his rehab assignment with the Hooks and looks to be healthy.

The Astros’ big man was the designated hitter in his first two rehab starts and played in the outfield on Friday. In the seventh inning of Friday night’s game, Alvarez was pinch-hit for and the Hooks announcers joked Alvarez could be on his way to Baltimore to join the Astros.

That wasn’t the case, but his Astros’ return seems to be as close as it’s been for quite some time.

The Astros currently hold a two game lead over the Seattle Mariners in the AL West, despite recently losing five out of six games. However, Houston has now won two straight against the Orioles, and has two more games in Baltimore to finish out their four-game weekend series.

The Astros have played well in Alvarez’s absence, and the slugger was having a rough start to the season when he got injured, but adding his bat to the lineup brings an instant jolt of power.

The healthy return of Alvarez is exactly what the Astros need to prepare for another deep postseason run.
