Astros general manager gives great news on potential Jeremy Pena extension

The Houston Astros were in the middle of contract negotiations with superstar shortstop Jeremy Peña, but he switched his agent to Scott Boras, and those negotiations ground to a halt.

Astros general manager Dana Brown, speaking on the Astros’ pregame show, revealed his stance on Peña’s decision to switch agents and where things stand during their contract negotiations.

Chandler Rome of The Athletic shared Brown’s message on Twitter/X. Brown said he contacted Boras “right away” once Peña switched agents. Brown also said, “We’re still interested in signing Jeremy long-term and we’ll be in touch.”

From where things stood not too long ago, that a Peña extension seemed far-fetched, this is a great bit of news. The Astros, despite trading away Kyle Tucker and letting players like Alex Bregman walk in recent years, are ready to invest in their team again.

Bringing back Peña long-term would be a huge boost not just to the Astros for the foreseeable future, but also to building faith in the organization. Committing to Peña will cost a lot, likely well-north of $100 million overall, but his prediction this year is worth it.

In 2025, his fourth season since debuting in 2022, Peña has career highs in every rate category. His batting average (.322) is his career high. Peña’s on-base percentage (.378) is also his career high. His .489 slugging percentage and .867 OPS are both easily his highest in his career.

Overall, Peña’s offensive production in 2025 is 41 percent better than his previous best season in 2022. It’s year four for Peña, and he’s breaking out offensively as one of the league’s best slugging shortstops.

He already proved himself in his rookie season, winning a Gold Glove and a World Series, while also being named World Series MVP. The only thing holding him back from being a superstar was his offense, and this season, he’s been incredible.

This update from Brown, that the Astros are looking to bring Peña back, is great news. In the middle of his best season in the pros, Peña was rumored to be on his way out of Houston with his new agent. But Brown is expressing his commitment to bringing Peña back and keeping him around long-term, even with the increased contract demands.
