Astros ex-relief pitcher elects free agency instead of minors assignment

The Houston Astros made a few notable roster moves that included their pitching staff. One of those moves was moving Josh Hader to the 15-Day Injured List, and reinstating Shawn Dubin and Colton Gordon.

However, those moves meant the organization had to make other moves to accommodate the new arms.

That player was Hector Neris, who was Designated for Assignment, and had a week to be picked up on waivers. He was not, and elected to become a free agent today rather than being optioned to the minor leagues.

Nerris had struggled with the Astros

In what was his third stint with Houston over the past three seasons, Nerris had a 5.40 ERA this season in 11.2 innings. He has also spent this season with two other organizations, the Angels and Braves.

Collectively, this season, Neris has a 6.75 ERA in 26.2 innings. His WHIP is in the high 1.000s and has given up far too many home runs and hits in those 26.2 innings.

Neris was subject to waivers, but no team picked up the claim, and now he’s a free agent.

After being unsuccessful for three organizations this year, and the Astros basically taking a Hail Mary on him, it’s hard to believe he will be picked up by another team, or at least another contending team that is.
