The Houston Astros, after the failed Forrest Whitley experiment, decided to part ways with the former top prospect. But, before they could completely designate Whitley for assignment, another American League contender swung a deal for the struggling pitcher.
According to Brian McTaggart of MLB.com on Twitter/X, the Astros have traded Whitley to the Tampa Bay Rays. Whitley, the 27-year-old, heads from Houston to Tampa Bay as he finds a new home after a rough first few appearances for the Astros.

The Rays, known for their ability to get the most out of pitchers, will look to turn Whitley’s career around like they’ve done for a few others over recent history. But, with how Whitley performed in Houston, it’ll be an uphill battle for the former top prospect.
Back in 2018 and 2019, Whitley was the Astros’ top prospect and was ranked inside the top ten overall. In 2022, Whitley dropped to fifth within the Astros organization, and in 2023, Whitley dropped out of the top 20 prospects in Houston.
Making his MLB debut in 2024, Whitley made three appearances, pitching 3.1 innings and not allowing a single earned run. But, he gave up two unearned runs, and also allowed a 2.400 WHIP, significantly higher than the league average.
While those appearances were concerning, his 2025 production was the final nail in the coffin of his Astros career. Across 7.1 innings of work, Whitley allowed 10 earned runs on nine hits and six walks. He also struck out eight batters, but with an ERA of 12.27, the Astros’ right-handed reliever wasn’t helping his team out.
In just five appearances in 2025, Whitley managed to accrue negative 0.4 WAR. It was a rough first impression in the Major Leagues for the former top prospect, but he now heads to Tampa Bay and hopes to benefit from a change of scenery.
The return for Whitley isn’t a lot, considering the Astros’ intent to designate him for assignment. After a disappointing Astros tenure, Whitley and the Astros part ways, and he’ll get a new opportunity on his second team in his professional career.
