The Houston Astros face competition in the race to retain two-time World Series champion Alex Bregman.
General manager Dana Brown even spoke of Bregman in the past tense and went as far as to say the Astros had already lost the franchise legend.
As of now, it appears unlikely that Houston will be able to keep him around for 2025 and beyond. Several other teams are also in the mix and trying to secure his services.
According to USA Today’s Bob Nightengale, the Astros’ icon has multiple four-year offers on the table, and one of them is from the Boston Red Sox.
“The Detroit Tigers, Boston Red Sox and the Houston Astros have all made offers of at least four years to Bregman, but no one has been willing to meet his asking price,” Nightengale reported.
Of course, the main issue holding things up is the fact that Bregman is searching for a deal of at least six years. That is what has made various teams hesitate, though Houston’s initial offer was for six years and $156 million.
Bregman turned that offer down, and it appears unlikely that he will return to Houston. Boston needs a right-handed bat and could move Bregman to second base and keep Rafael Devers at third.
Even with Boston also in the mix for Nolan Arenado, it is going to be tough for the Astros to keep Bregman around. He slashed .260/.315/.453 with 26 home runs, 75 RBI and a 4.1 WAR in 2024 with Houston.
If this is the end of his run in Houston, it certainly was a memorable one. He was a two-time All-Star and helped lead the Astros to four American League pennants.
We’ll see what comes next for Bregman.
