Aston Villa’s upturn in performance ends after a 2-1 defeat to Dutch side Go Ahead Eagles in the Europa League.
The West Midlands club took an early lead, before the Eagles came level before half time.
And it was a second half to forget as the hosts added a second goal and Emiliano Buendia skied a key penalty for Villa to equalise.
Despite a handful of chances, Villa were unable to capitalise and keep an undefeated string of games.
It was a slow start to the new season for The Villa with six games in the Premier League without a win, plus losing on penalties to Brentford in the EFL Cup.
Things turned around in their opening Europa League fixture against Bologna, where an early John McGinn goal sealed a 1-nil victory.
Since then they had three consecutive League wins, and hadn’t lost their opening two games in Europe.
The recent run of form was a good sign for Unai Emery who started to feel some pressure with the poor start.
A sixth place finished in the League last season guaranteed them a spot in the Europe. After 8 games with 3 wins, 3 draws and two losses, Villa sit 11th on the table so far this season.
But the shock defeat to the Dutch club will be a knock to their recent turnaround.
They’ll have the chance to bounce back in on October 26 as they face Manchester City at home in the Premier League.
But with City’s recent form, that may be a tough task.
Villa’s next Europa League game is November 6, at Villa Park against Maccabi Tel-Aviv.
The game has already caused a stir after ticketing issues for the away fans, due to high risk classification around protesting, hate crimes and conflict in relation to the ongoing attacks on Gaza.
