Arsenal step up shock interest in out-of-favour Chelsea star

Arsenal have been extremely active in the summer transfer window. They have been linked with multiple players across different positions. Amidst all the attacking players, Mikel Arteta is also keen to sign a backup goalkeeper for David Raya in this summer transfer window.

The Gunners were chasing Espanyol custodian Joan Garcia, who reportedly is tilting towards a move to Barcelona. Therefore, Arsenal needed and alternative and according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, the North Londoners have stepped up a shock interest in Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga.

While Kepa may not be a very fancy signing for Arsenal, but the Spaniard is available for only £5 million release clause and could be a value signing for the club.

Kepa joined Chelsea in 2019 but never managed to cement his position in the starting eleven. However, he bounced back with a loan stint at Bournemouth this season. Hence, Bournemouth are keen to sign the goalkeeper since he is available for such a low transfer fee.

The 30-year-old may not be as exciting prospect as Garcia, but he could be a solid option as backup for Raya, who won his consecutive second Golden Gloves in 2024/25 Premier League.

On the other hand, Chelsea are keen to offload players so that they can facilitate their new signings in attack. So, they will be looking to let go of Kepa this summer.

The 30-year-old has had a loan stint with Real Madrid last season when Thibaut Courtois was injured. he did a decent job for Los Blancos. But he returned to Chelsea and then was loaned out to Bournemouth.

His impressive performances for the Cherries meant that they are also keen to hold onto the 30-year-old. They want to sign him permanently but for now there’s no progress from the south coast as Arsenal are leading the race.

The signing of Kepa at such low transfer fee would help Arteta facilitate the other areas where they desperately need reinforcements this summer transfer window.
