Arsenal and Liverpool target now ‘very close’ to joining Real Madrid this summer

Arsenal’s transfer plans may be in serious trouble as Real Madrid moves closer to signing Martin Zubimendi.

The Real Sociedad midfielder has been on the radar of multiple Premier League clubs, but reports now suggest that the Spanish giants are leading the race for his signature.

Zubimendi has long been a target for Arsenal, with Mikel Arteta reportedly pushing for his arrival to strengthen the midfield.

Liverpool had also shown interest, especially after missing out on key targets last summer. However, it now appears that Real Madrid are set to secure the 25-year-old, dealing a major blow to the English clubs.

Why Real Madrid need Martin Zubimendi?

According to reports from Spanish outlets (Fichajes backed by AS), Zubimendi is “very close” to finalizing a move to the Santiago Bernabeu.

With Luka Modric nearing the end of his career and Toni Kroos also in the latter stages, Madrid is eager to refresh its midfield.

The club sees Zubimendi as a long-term replacement who can help maintain their dominance in La Liga and Europe.

Transfer expert David Ornstein had previously stated that Arsenal was “fully expecting” to sign Zubimendi this summer. The Gunners were believed to have put in extensive groundwork, hoping to convince the player to join their project.

However, Real Madrid’s interest appears to have changed the situation. Liverpool had also explored a move for the midfielder last summer, but Zubimendi opted to stay at Real Sociedad.

Reports indicated that he did not reject the Premier League outright but preferred to remain in Spain at the time. Now, with an offer from Madrid on the table, he seems set to continue his career in La Liga rather than make a move to England.

Real Madrid could reportedly use funds from a potential sale of Eduardo Camavinga to complete the signing. Zubimendi’s release clause is said to be around €60 million, a fee that Madrid appears willing to pay to secure the highly-rated midfielder.

With the summer window approaching, Arsenal and Liverpool will have to rethink their plans as one of their top targets looks set to join Real Madrid.
