Around La Liga: Oviedo pick up historic win, Girona struggles continue

Real Oviedo vs Real Sociedad and Girona vs Sevilla are probably the two less talked about games out of the four from La Liga this Saturday but there was plenty to talk about from both games.

In Real Oviedo vs Real Sociedad, the scrappy Oviedo team that was on the brink of liquidation at one point, have managed to claw their way back to the first division and get their first win in the top flight in 24 years.

In the Girona vs Sevilla game, it was the story of two struggling sides who could be the main players in the relegation battle. Even in a potential relegation scrap, Girona still seemed inferior to their opponent.

Historic Day For Oviedo

Oviedo have had quite the story in their rise to the first division but they are trying to continue their story by staying in the first division.

They have been a bit unlucky with their first two games being against Villarreal and Real Madrid who they looked okay against but were always going to struggle to get a result against.

Now, they finally pick up their first points of the campaign getting a win against La Liga staple, Real Sociedad.

Real Sociedad might be concerned as they are yet to win this season and it’s not surprising with the loss of Martin Zubimendi and their long time coach Imanol. This is shaping up to be a long season for the Basque team but the story from the game is about Oviedo and their first win in La Liga in 24 years.

Their goalie, Aaron Escandell, has continued to impress, seeming to be the key player that could keep Oviedo up. Another one of their key players this season could be winger Haissem Hassan who seems to be a real difference maker when he comes on the pitch and got an assist today.

It seems like Real Oviedo could be in real contention to stay up this season.

Girona Struggles Continue

Girona seem to be seriously looking at relegation this season after barely escaping the drop last year.

They have lost three games to start off the season and have conceded 10 goals while only scoring once.

Games against Rayo Vallecano and Villarreal aren’t easy, but this was a chance to pick up some points against another side who could be in the relegation battle.

Sevilla also finished just above the drop last season and haven’t made many signings to improve the team. They had close games against Athletic Club and Getafe where they impressed but are still likely a relegation contender.

Yet, Sevilla beat Girona 2-0 and it was a fair result for how the game unfolded.

Girona perhaps deserved a goal, but their defense is very leaky and seems like any team can score on them at will.

Girona are the biggest favorites to get relegated at this moment which is quite the downfall for a club that played Champions League football last year.
