Arne Slot trusts Liverpool’s new signing to replace Salah during AFCON

Liverpool have done great business in the summer transfer window until now, signing some high-profile players to bolster their roster as they aim to dominate the Premier League whilst pushing for continental crowns.

Among the notable signings this summer, they have secured players like Florian Wirtz, Jeremie Frimpong, Hugo Ekitike and Milos Kerkez among other names.

While all the players have unique capabilities which Arne Slot will look to extract to the fullest, he expects a bit more out of Frimpong in the upcoming season.

The Dutch tactician is planning to deploy Frimpong as a right winger replacing Mohamed Salah when he won’t be available for Liverpool during the Africa Cup of Nations due to his international duties with Egypt.

Although Frimpong is predominantly a fullback, his strengths are in his attacking prowess with overlapping runs and vicious crosses from wide areas.

His powerful attacking traits made him a gamechanger in Xabi Alonso’s setup at Bayer Leverkusen and Slot is hoping to take a leaf out of the Spaniard’s book to help the Reds in a situation of crisis.

What did Slot say about his expectations from Frimpong about replacing Salah?

When asked about how he is planning the squad with AFCON happening this season, Slot stated, “Yes, we definitely thought about that. We brought in Jeremie Frimpong because we think he can play as a right full-back, but I also think and feel he can play as a right-winger.

“I, we, did think about the fact that we’re going to miss Mo, I think as a maximum for six games – but that’s quite a lot in the Premier League, especially if you see how well he did last season. Signing Jeremie Frimpong was for multiple reasons but one of them was also that he could replace Mo if Mo is not there. There are other options for me to replace Mo with as well – but Jeremie is definitely one of them.”

Frimpong was an absolute menace in a right wing-back role for Leverkusen in the 2023/24 campaign when they won the Bundesliga title unbeaten.

He registered 14 goals and provided 10 assists in 47 appearances across all competitions for Leverkusen in a record-breaking campaign.

Salah could miss up to six games due to the continental tournament. He will miss key Premier League fixtures against Arsenal, Tottenham Hotspur, Wolves, Fulham, and Leeds United.
