Nearly 23 years after their dads went head-to-head at the high school level, high school seniors Kiyan Anthony (Carmelo) and Bryce James (LeBron) were set to face off Friday as Anthony’s Long Island Lutheran (N.Y.) squad will take on James’ Sierra Canyon (Calif.).
Anthony is one of the top seniors in the class and has already committed to play at Syracuse next season. James has yet to commit to a school for next year but has received scholarship offers from Ohio State and Duquesne amid interest from other schools.
With James & Co. traveling cross country to face Anthony’s squad on Long Island, there will be plenty of eyes on the high-profile matchup between the sons of two all-time greats.
Unfortunately, those hoping to witness the famous sons grace the floor at UBS Arena will be treated to a scornful surprise: Neither Anthony nor James are expected to play in Friday’s contest.

The reasons for their absence are unclear. Anthony is considered a blue-chip prospect, having shined at Christ the King High School in Queens before transferring to LuHi. James, meanwhile, is a bit more polarizing, with 247Sports listing him as a three-star prospect while ESPN handed him four-star billing. He’s yet to play in a game for the Crusaders this season.
