Atlético Madrid had spent 200 million euros in the summer transfer window and were hoping to make some noise in all competitions this season.
Instead, they’ve had a poor start to their league campaign without a win after three games.
What looked to be an exciting season for Los Colchoneros, has turned into the worst start of the Diego Simeone era.
Top 4 Race?
As mentioned before, they’ve spent a lot this transfer window and did the same the season before. Some would argue that this shouldn’t be held against Simeone because the club has neglected refreshing the team earlier and this is them just refreshing the squad.
That’s a fair argument but the results are very much below par right now as Atlético didn’t have a tough schedule to start the season.
Playing Espanyol, Elche, and Alaves and not getting a single win is shocking stuff from the Madrid club.
It seems like they are out of a title race before the season is really even starting and may be headed for a top four battle this year.
Atlético has been known as the perennial third place team in La Liga who could occasionally pull off the odd title here and there under Simeone.
Now the third place spot isn’t even guaranteed as Villarreal and Athletic Club are both starting off strong and have Champions League level squads. Villarreal have also spent a fair bit of money this window and have played great football under manager Marcelino.
Athletic Club finished fourth last year and retained star man Nico Williams who looks ready to take another leap and be the main man this year.
With those two clubs looking on the up, there should be serious concern for Atlético Madrid this season.
