Antony heads to Real Betis, but fans surprised over clause

Antony has finally put an end to his 90 million Euro nightmare at Manchester United. Well, temporarily.

It was confirmed on Monday that the Brazilian, who arrived at Old Trafford in the summer of 2022 for the huge transfer fee amid much fanfare, has been loaned to Real Betis.

It had reached a point where many fans at Old Trafford were hoping he would be sold, even at a substantial loss, after some branded him ‘the worst signing of all time’.

And while there is often a situation where loan exits for players who just aren’t working out somewhere are made permanent, Fabrizio Romano confirmed that no such clause exists in this instance.

“Antony to Real Betis, here we go,” said Romano in his trademark style.

“Verbal agreement in place between all parties with Man United too. Documents being checked; then time for travel and medical tests.

“United will let him leave on loan deal with 𝐧𝐨 buy clause. He’ll be formally back to United in June.”

Will Antony return to Manchester United?

As it stands, yes. He’ll be reporting to Ruben Amorim again next season.

However, it obviously does not stop Betis from negotiating a fee in the summer, should the loan spell work out.

This may be the situation that enables The Red Devils to recoup the most money, as his value right now is understandably a very small fraction of the fee United paid in ’22.

Should Antony have a great six months in Spain, United will find themselves in a much stronger bargaining position for Betis to extend the stay of a player who has been a great addition, with no pre-agreed figure from his career low point.
