Antonio Conte record in UEFA Champions League: Napoli manager has struggled to match domestic form in Europe

Napoli boss Antonio Conte has been in charge of some of Europe’s biggest clubs, and naturally that has seen him take the field on club football’s greatest stage, the UEFA Champions League.

The Italian tactician has won five Serie A titles, the Premier League, an FA Cup, and an Italian Super Cup as his trophy case bursts with domestic silverware.

Yet for all of Conte’s success throughout his exceptional managerial career, he has not been able to replicate his domestic plaudits in European play.

The Sporting News details the results Conte has achieved in the Champions League and wider continental football, and where he has fallen short.

Antonio Conte record in Champions League

Antonio Conte has led a team into the Champions League on six separate occasions.

He has been eliminated from the group stage on half those attempts, while progressing to the Round of 16 twice and the quarterfinals once. Conte has never made the semifinals of the Champions League.

The performances were, on the whole, bitterly disappointing. On two of his three trips to the knockout stage, his side was blanked across both legs in defeat, while the other saw a painful exit for Chelsea at the hands of Paris Saint-Germain in a Round of 16 penalty shootout.

Meanwhile, in all three group-stage exits, Conte’s side were knocked out while finishing behind a club of inferior stature. In 2013 Juventus were beaten by Galatasaray to the second qualifying spot in their group behind Real Madrid, while Inter were clipped by the likes of Borussia Dortmund, Borussia Monchengladbach, and Shakhtar Donetsk in group-stage standings.

Antonio Conte in other European competitions

While Conte has enjoyed more success in the sister competitions of the famed Champions League, it still has not resulted in a trophy.

Both his trips through the Europa League knockout stage came on occasions in which his club was dropped from the Champions League group stage via a third-place finish. He reached the semifinals both times, including a final appearance in 2020 with Inter, which ended in a gut-wrenching defeat.

His worst official performance in European competition also largely wasn’t his responsibility, as he suffered a group-stage exit in the Conference League having only just signed on at Tottenham. Conte was only in charge for their penultimate group-stage game that season, with their final match going down as a defeat to Rennes via forfeit due to scheduling conflicts, which sealed Spurs’ elimination from the competition.
