Anthony Richardson injury update: Colts QB injures finger on throwing hand after brutal sack vs. Ravens

The Colts came into the preseason with a quarterback training camp battle on their hands. Anthony Richardson was the incumbent, but after a rocky start to his career, Indianapolis signed former first-round pick Daniel Jones to a one-year deal in the offseason.

Richardson got the starting nod for Indy’s first preseason game with the plan that Jones would take over for him after the first quarter and a half. Head coach Shane Steichen also predetermined that this would flip for the second preseason game, with Jones starting and Richardson coming on in relief.

What Steichen didn’t plan for was David Ojabo. The Ravens defender came untouched on a play in the first quarter and obliterated Richardson in the backfield. He left the field with what was thought to be an arm or shoulder injury, but trainers started looking at his hand on the sideline.

Here are the latest updates on Richardson’s preseason injury.

Anthony Richardson injury update

When Ojabo sacked Richardson and the quarterback was pulled ahead of a 3rd-down play, it could have been any number of reasons given the violent nature of the hit.

The announcers pointed out that he appeared to be favoring his right arm as he went to the sideline. Colts reporter Stephen Holder noticed that trainers checked him out, but it seemed like Richardson was good to go. Then, the trainers returned to him, and he was favoring his throwing hand. The QB was trying to grip the football and was struggling, so Jones stayed in the game on the next series, and Richardson was shut down for the day.

Richardson was officially ruled out for the rest of the game with a finger injury, per the team.

It looks like in the video below that Richardson may have dislocated or broken his pinky finger.

During halftime, head coach Shane Steichen confirmed that Richardson did dislocate his pinky finger, and that there wasn’t a timetable for his return, per Stephen Holder.

In his post-game press conference, Steichen said Richardson is “day-to-day.” He said the QB’s pinky was dislocated, but they popped it back in.

In Richardson’s post-game presser, he said, “I’ll be good. I was able to spin it a little bit,” talking about being able to throw on the field.

Anthony Richardson stats today

  • 2 completions
  • 3 attempts
  • 21 yards
  • 0 touchdowns
  • 0 interceptions
  • 0 carries

Richardson’s first drive was solid. He stayed in the pocket and completed two of his three passes for 21 yards. He found wide receiver Adonai Mitchell for a 15-yard gain and rookie tight end Tyler Warren for six yards. Richardson had another completion on a screen pass to Warren, which was wiped out due to an ineligible man downfield penalty. The drive stalled and ended in a 53-yard field goal.

Richardson got a second drive in the first quarter. He got obliterated by a sack from an unblocked defender. Richardson left the field, favoring his right arm. He didn’t attempt any passes that drive. Richardson was ruled out for the game with a finger injury, so his day is done.

The injury comes at a horrible time for the QB. The consensus has been that he and Jones are neck-and-neck in their training camp battle. Richardson’s finger injury caused him to miss out on about a quarter of action that he could have used to try to get a leg up on Jones. Now, he will have to hope that Jones doesn’t look as good with the extra opportunity and will turn his attention to healing up for the first week of the preseason.
