Analyst gives Red Sox disappointing grade nearly halfway through season

The Boston Red Sox have not exactly lived up to expectations this season.

After an offseason trading for ace pitcher Garrett Crochet and signing two-time All-Star third baseman Alex Bregman, the Red Sox looked like they were going to be a different team. Now, nearly halfway through the season, Boston is sitting with a losing record and just recently traded away three-time All-Star Rafael Devers in the biggest blockbuster trade this season to the San Francisco Giants.

Bleacher Report’s Tim Kelly gave every team in Major League Baseball a midseason grade, with the Red Sox receiving a disappointing D grade.

“From a contention standpoint, the Red Sox are hardly out of things,” Kelly wrote. “But the vibes have been weird. Rafael Devers is gone even though he was performing like one of the best hitters in baseball. Much-hyped rookies Roman Anthony, Marcelo Mayer and Kristian Campbell haven’t delivered the expected impact to this point.”

“It bears watching whether Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow considers making a managerial change after the season if Boston doesn’t reach the postseason.”

The Red Sox are nowhere near being out of contention for a playoff spot this season. Despite ranking middle of the pack in most pitching categories like WHIP, batting average against and ERA, Boston has still managed to bounce back after a six-game losing streak a week and a half ago.

In this recent stretch, Anthony and Mayer have been looking improved, and Bregman is nearing a return. Though things may not be going the way everyone hoped they would heading into the season, the Red Sox are still right in the hunt.
