On May 3, in Saudi Arabia, Canelo defeated William Scull via unanimous decision in a fight that saw the least amount of activity of any 12-round fight in history.
Combined, they managed to throw just 445 punches, which equates to just 18.5 punches each per three-minute round.
WBC President, Mauricio Sulaiman, called the Cuban’s performance “terrible”, accusing him of running away and refusing to fight.
Another significant boxing figure that also had something to say about the undisputed super-middleweight championship clash was Amir Khan.
The British boxer fought Canelo in 2016 and, even though it ended in the sixth round, they threw 336 punches within that shorter time.
Bolton’s Khan, now 38, had a very different perspective on the fight, believing that William Scull should have had his hand raised at the end, even though one scorecard read 119-109 to Canelo.
Former world champion Khan told BoxNation, “I had Scull winning that fight, he was the better mover, he boxed well, he should hold his head high, he put on a great performance.
“I thought Scull won by two rounds. Scull was making him miss and was catching him with some good shots. If you’re looking at who was landing the better shots, it was Scull with the cleaner shots and with power. Scull was throwing a lot more shots.”
Despite Khan’s views, it was Canelo who was crowned the undisputed super-middleweight champion for the second time in his career.
