Alphonso Davies opens up on painful experience of recovering from ACL injury

Bayern Munich have endured their fair share of injury issues throughout the 2024/25 campaign with several key players sidelined for sustained periods.

One vital star who has missed a chunk of the season has been Alphonso Davies after the 24-year-old tore his ACL in Canada’s CONCACAF Nations League third-place clash with the USA in March.

Immediately, Davies’ agent, Nedal Huoseh called out Canada Soccer and their head coach, Jesse Marsch’s lack of understanding regarding injury and player safety. Huoseh allegedly claimed his client was forced to play by Marsch despite struggling physically.

Bayern Munich also raised their concerns and revealed neither they nor the Canada management team knew about the extent of Davies’ injury.

Eventually, on his return to Germany, it was revealed he had suffered a season-ending setback

The tension between Bayern Munich and the Canadian Soccer Federation has continued to escalate with the German giants considering legal action over the matter.

Later, Marsch clarified his stance on the injury fiasco, sharing he didn’t put pressure on the player to feature in the match. He believes the injury was unavoidable and praised Davies’ response.

Davies is on track within his rehabilitation period, but he’s expected to remain out of action for at least six to eight months, meaning his club side will be without him for the FIFA Club World Cup in June.

Davies uploaded a vlog on his personal YouTube channel sharing his rehab journey from the ACL injury. In the 18-minute long video, he expressed his disappointment over suffering a first major injury, but admitted, “At the end of the day, this is the game we play. These things happen.”

The defender also revealed he broke down in the initial days of his injury, due to the physical and mental toll.

“I’m not going to lie, it was hard. I had a mental breakdown. I don’t know what came over me. I went to take a shower, and I just broke down in tears and panic.”
