Adam Schefter reveals why Packers legend Aaron Rodgers hasn’t signed with a team yet

It seems like the entire football world is waiting on former Green Bay Packers star quarterback Aaron Rodgers to decide what he will do for the 2025 season.

It looks like he has only two options at this point: either sign with the Pittsburgh Steelers, who seem to be seriously interested in him, or retire.

Rodgers’ preference, however, has reportedly been to play for the Minnesota Vikings. While it looks like the Vikings are committed to going with J.J. McCarthy as their starter under center, ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter feels Rodgers is holding out hope that the Vikings will actually be interested in him.

“I think he’s waiting to see, if over time, there’s any sort of chance where the odds of signing in Minnesota increase and that opportunity could open up,” Schefter said on an appearance on UNSPORTSMANLIKE Radio. “The Vikings have never fully dismissed it or squashed it. They haven’t exactly embraced it right now, but they also haven’t had OTAs with their former 10th overall pick J.J. McCarthy back and leading the team and knowing what it’s like.”

The future Hall of Famer met with the Steelers recently, and head coach Mike Tomlin said the meeting went well. However, Tomlin also said there’s no internal timeline as far as a decision on Rodgers’ end.

Rodgers, 41, just completed a very disappointing two seasons with the New York Jets. He tore his Achilles during their first offensive series of the 2023 season, and even though he was fully healthy last season, they won two fewer games in 2024 than they did in 2023 when he was out.

He threw for 3,897 yards and 28 touchdowns while completing 63% of his pass attempts last season. However, he posted the lowest yards gained per pass attempt and passer rating he has ever had in a full season.
