Adam Sandler-Timothee Chalamet relationship, explained: How Knicks fandom, love of pickup basketball inspired viral Oscars moment

The 2025 Oscars were filled with a number of eye-catching moments. With Conan O’Brien at the helm, the much-watched spectacle proved a fairly compelling event.

Few moments inspired more intrigue than Adam Sandler’s cameo, however. The 58-year old served up his best hooper impression on Sunday night, donning the sort of outfit one would expect to see at the Y.

Sandler’s showcase was striking for more reasons than one, though. He invited the whole of the Oscars field — and everyone else who packed into the Dolby Theatre concourses — to 5-v-5 runs upon conclusion of the star-filled event.

He also delivered one of the lines of the night, showering fellow A-lister Timothee Chalamet with a heart-warming — and wildly inaccurate — pronunciation of his name.

Sandler and Chalamet have established quite the rapport with one another over the years. Sandler’s viral moment served as further evidence of this dynamic. But just how did the duo become so close-knit? Basketball certainly had something to do with it.

Sandler and Chalamet are rather close, having struck a friendship with one another in recent years. It’s easy to see why the two are so fond of one another — they’re two of the most prominent actors of their respective generations, earning plaudits in a variety of roles.

Additionally, Sandler and Chalamet share an another common passion: they both are basketball-crazed. Sandler, a Knicks enthusiast, has made his love for the sport well known, appearing in a pair of hoops-centered films: “Uncut Gems” (2019) and “Hustle” (2022). 

He’s also a fixture at basketball courts across the tri-state area, gallivanting from asphalt to asphalt in the hope of reliving his childhood dreams.

Chalamet has done the same, popping up at various Knicks duels over the years. In January, he scored a signed jersey from New York supernova Karl-Anthony Towns.

Chalamet’s love for hoops transcends the professional game. It’s reflected on the cracked surfaces that pockmark New York City’s landscape, too. Much like Sandler, Chalamet, too, loves a game of pickup. In fact, the two competed against one another in a pickup game in July 2023.

Perhaps that doesn’t explain the full contour of kinship Sandler and Chalamet appear to have with one another. It certainly gives Sandler’s epic pronunciation of his colleague’s surname a bit more flavor, however.

Sandler needed a quality outfit to really sell the pickup basketball bit. Fortunately, he was able to find attire befitting of the moment, striding into Dolby Theatre draped in the finest furs.

In addition to his teal Aviator Nation sweatshirt and billowing purple shorts that would look more appropriate in an early-2000s NBA matchup, Sandler also showcased a glimmering pair of kicks. The shoes in question? “Championship Mindset” Curry 11s.

Has Adam Sandler won an Oscar?

For all of his acting exploits, Sandler is yet to pick up an Oscar. In fact, he’s yet to receive a nomination.

Don’t pity Sandler too much, though. He’s won 48 major awards, including an Independent Spirit Award and the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor.
