Aaron Rodgers predicted as ‘a dark horse’ to pull a Brett Favre, join Packers’ NFC North rival

It was always a bit unusual to see Brett Favre in Minnesota Vikings purple.

There’s a chance that we’ll soon have that same awkward feeling with Aaron Rodgers.

The quarterback dominoes in the NFL are starting to fall, and NFL insider Ian Rapoport threw an interesting nugget into a post on X on Saturday morning: “Aaron Rodgers lurks, considering the Giants with the Vikings as a dark horse.”

Rodgers to the Giants has been well-speculated on, but the Vikings are a new idea.

Following Geno Smith’s trade from Seattle to Las Vegas, former Minnesota QB Sam Darnold is now the favorite to be the new Seahawks quarterback. That would leave the Vikings seeking a possible veteran passer to lead them as soon-to-be second-year player J.J. McCarthy recovers from an injury that kept him out his entire rookie season.

Favre and Rodgers’ paths to Minnesota would be oddly similar.

Favre had his false retirements mixed in, but otherwise the itinerary looks the same – Green Bay Packers to New York Jets to Minnesota Vikings.

The duo ranks 1-2 in all the Packers’ passing records. Favre holds the edge in passing yards while playing for Green Bay, but Rodgers threw more touchdowns.

Favre, the gunslinger that he was, tossed 286 interceptions as a Packer, while Rodgers threw only 105.

It’s an open question as to whether Rodgers can still be an effective NFL quarterback in what will be his age-42 season this fall. But he will be an additional season removed from his 2023 torn Achilles, which can only help.

In 2024, Rodgers and the Jets went 5-12. He did throw 28 touchdowns compared to 11 interceptions.

NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero reported that McCarthy is set to return to practice this spring. There are also multiple reports out Saturday that suggest Minnesota could bring back mid-season signing Daniel Jones as the veteran presence to join with McCarthy.
