Newcastle United prepare £125m triple transfer to bolster Champions League plans

Newcastle United, eager to strengthen their squad ahead of a demanding Champions League campaign, have launched an audacious £125m [$171m] triple bid for Joao Pedro, Anthony Elanga, and James Trafford, as reported by The Telegraph’s Luke Edwards.

After weeks of discussions and internal planning, the club has formally approached Brighton, Nottingham Forest, and Burnley, placing offers of around £50m [$68m] each for Pedro and Elanga and £25m [$34m] for Trafford, whose departure from Turf Moor could be facilitated by an existing gentleman’s agreement.

With Champions League football returning to St. James’ Park and Eddie Howe keen to assemble a squad capable of competing across all fronts, this coordinated move shows Newcastle’s intent to act decisively in a competitive market.

All three players are understood to be interested in the switch, drawn by the prospect of working under Howe and competing at the highest level in Europe, and with wages reportedly not posing any issues.

Newcastle’s primary challenge lies in bridging the valuation gaps with each selling club.

What is Newcastle’s current transfer situation?

Brighton are willing to consider Pedro’s exit but are aiming to extract maximum value from one of their key attacking assets. The Seagulls believe Pedro’s age, versatility, and recent form justify a premium fee.

Nottingham Forest, on the other hand, remain firm in their stance that Anthony Elanga is not available for transfer. However, Newcastle continue to press, sensing that the player’s interest in the move could shift the balance.

Burnley are still negotiating terms for James Trafford despite a gentleman’s agreement that would allow him to leave this summer. The sticking point remains the final fee, which the Clarets are determined to maximise.

Pedro offers versatility across the front line and has been a long-standing target of Howe since his Watford days, while Elanga would provide much-needed pace and width on the right, which will upgrade the flank currently held by Jacob Murphy.

22-year-old Trafford is viewed as a long-term successor to 33-year-old Nick Pope, with his strong distribution skills fitting perfectly into Newcastle’s evolving style of play.
