Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo emotional after a fan horrifically taunts Ketel Marte about his late mother

On Tuesday, June 24, the Arizona Diamondbacks took on the Chicago White Sox at Rate Field. The Diamondbacks ended up dominating the White Sox with a final score of 4 to 1. Unfortunately, the win was overshadowed by an extremely unfortunate moment when a White Sox fan things way too far.

It was the seventh inning, and second basemen Ketel Marte was preparing to bat. All of a sudden, a fan from the crowd yelled a horrific remark about Marte’s late mother. Tragically, Marte’s mother, Elpidia Valdez, was killed in a car accident in 2017.

After the remark was made, it was evident that Marte had heard it loud and clear. He could be seen crying while glancing over at the fan who made the comment.

The Diamonbacks’ manager, Torey Lovullo, could tell that Marte was upset and was later seen comforting him along with shortstop Geraldo Perdomo.

After the game, Lovullo appeared emotional himself when speaking about the derogatory comment.

“It was a terrible moment,” he said. “Fans are nasty, and fans go too far, sometimes. And I love my players, and I’m going to protect them.”

“I’ve known Ketel for nine years, and he’s had some unbelievably great moments and some hardships, as well, and some really, really tough moments in his life,” he continued. “And I know those. At the end of the day, we’re human beings and we have emotions. I saw him hurting, and I wanted to protect him.”
