Steelers predicted to add 64-TD quarterback to replace Will Howard as Aaron Rodgers successor

Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers sat down with Pat McAfee on Tuesday and shared some big news.

Rodgers revealed that he is most likely going to retire following the 2025 season, which isn’t a total surprise but confirms that he isn’t likely to be more than a one-season solution in Pittsburgh.

“Yeah, I’m pretty sure this is it,” he said. “That’s why we just did a one-year deal. Steelers didn’t need to put any extra years on that or anything, so this was really about finishing with a lot of love and fun and peace for the career that I’ve had.”

The Steelers drafted Will Howard in the sixth round of this year’s draft and the hope is that he’ll develop into a starter in time for 2026. However, seeing as how he’s a late-round pick, that is far from guaranteed to happen.

Apparently, NFL Spin Zone’s Sayre Bedinger doesn’t have much faith in Howard becoming a starter, and that’s why Bedinger has the Steelers taking Penn State quarterback Drew Allar with the No. 15 overall pick in the 2026 NFL draft.

Just like with Arch Manning, NFL Draft analysts right now seem to be very split on the polarizing Drew Allar out of Penn State. You can only imagine what NFL teams are saying about him right now. When it comes to physical traits and arm talent, Allar has #1 overall pick type of stuff. When it comes to decision-making, he might be more of a Day 3 pick when you watch him consistently. The optimistic view is that he figures out how to put it all together in 2025 and becomes a legitimate 1st-round player, and a team like the Steelers would love to cash in on the fall of a talent like this.

Over three years at Penn State, Allar has completed 62.9% of his passes for 6,302 yards, has rushed for 560 yards and scored 64 total touchdowns.

Allar had his best collegiate showing in 2024, when he totaled career-highs in completion rate (66.5%), passing yards (3,327) and rushing yards (302) while scoring 30 total touchdowns (24 passing, six rushing).

Making his season more impressive is the fact that Allar didn’t have a lot of help at wide receiver. It’ll be interesting to see how much he can elevate his game with better weapons around him.

While Allar won’t blow you away with athleticism, he does have more than enough to help him at the next level. Where he really shines is with his arm talent that enables him to make every throw on a football field. Allar also has ideal size, standing at 6-foot-5 and 236 pounds.

NFL Network’s Daniel Jeremiah wants to see Allar be more consistent on some of the easier throws, and he needs to improve his “footwork under pressure,” two things Jeremiah believes can definitely be fixed.

If Allar can build on what he did in 2025, he should be a first-round pick in 2026. Knowing that, he could be an option for Pittsburgh if they aren’t sold on Howard following this season.
