The New York Yankees are always a contender to land superstar free agents. Their history and spending habits never rule them out from any player, including Kyle Tucker, who will be a free agent after the season.
The Chicago Cubs traded for Kyle Tucker in the offseason, and he has been a key part of their success this season. However, he is going to be tough to re-sign as he knows what type of money he could make on the open market. Tucker is projected to earn a 12-year, $525 million deal in free agency, and teams in bigger markets than Chicago could steal Tucker.
The Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Mets and Yankees always seem to be in the mix for the game’s biggest superstars when they hit free agency. However, The Athletic’s Yankees insider Chris Kirschner does not see the Yankees landing Tucker.
“They had interest in trading for Kyle Tucker this past offseason before the Cubs traded for him,” Kirschner replied to a question about the Yankees going after Tucker. “With how the Cubs (and Tucker) are playing, I would imagine Chicago will try its best in re-signing him long-term. Otherwise, what is the point of trading for him (unless they win the World Series)? Recent history suggests the Yankees won’t be the team that lands Tucker in free agency. When was the last time the Yankees landed a major external position player?”
The Yankees lost Juan Soto to the Mets last offseason, and Tucker would be a great long-term replacement. However, the Yankees do indeed not have a great history in landing star external position players, as Kirschner noted.

Tucker is slashing .281/.391/.521 with 15 home runs. He is a key part of the Cubs’ offense, which has been one of the best in baseball. If the Cubs cannot sign him, teams like the Dodgers and Mets may be willing to write him a blank check. Not to say the Yankees cannot compete financially, but their past does not indicate that they will beat out other suitors.
