Cooper Flagg NBA contract vs. NIL money: How Mavericks rookie deal compares to Duke earnings

Cooper Flagg is widely expected to be the No. 1 overall pick to the Mavericks, as the Duke star has been the consensus top prospect in the draft for the past year.

While Flagg is set to make millions as a top draft pick, he already earned a large amount of money in his lone collegiate season. Flagg was the top recruit in the country last year, and with NIL deals, he was able to leverage that status into hefty endorsement contracts.

So, how will Flagg’s NBA contract compare to his NIL deals? Here’s a breakdown.

Cooper Flagg contract

The basis of Flagg’s contract as the No. 1 overall pick is already laid out in the CBA. Rookies can sign four-year deals for as low as 80 percent and as high as 120 percent of the rookie scale, which includes two team options in years three and four.

According to Salary Swish, if Flagg gets the maximum allowed per the CBS, he will sign a four-year deal worth $62.73 million that ascends each season. Here’s a look at the range

Year Minimum Rookie Scale Maximum
1 $9,217,280 $11,521,600 $13,825,920
2 $9,678,320 $12,097,900 $14,517,480
3* $10,139,120 $12,673,900 $15,208,680
4* $12,785,430 $15,981,788 $19,178,145

*Team option*

If Flagg is drafted first overall and signs for 120 percent of the rookie scale, he will earn $62,730,226 over his first four seasons in the NBA.

Cooper Flagg NIL deal

In his lone season at Duke, Flagg made over $28 million in NIL deals, Howard Bryant reported.

“He had a $13 million deal with New Balance and then $15 million with Fanatics,” Bryant said in an interview with Bob Costas, via the Duke Chronicle.

Additionally, On3 valued Flagg’s NIL deal last year at $4.8 million.

If those numbers are true, then Flagg will have made more money last year than he will on his rookie salary in the NBA. Flagg won’t reach the $28 million mark in salary until his second season, assuming he signs for the maximum allowed.

Of course, Flagg will still have his endorsements with New Balance and Fanatics as he enters the NBA, but Bryant’s reporting doesn’t include any deal that Duke may have paid him to attend the university.
