Cubs could add All-Star $13 million pitcher, Per ESPN

The Chicago Cubs are having one of the best seasons in a long time, and this year, the team shows flashes of the Cubs team that won the 2016 World Series.

One of the main reasons the Cubs are off to a hot start is due to the trade the team made this winter, acquiring Houston Astros outfielder Kyle Tucker.

Now, Chicago should look to make another major trade before this year’s trade deadline. Since the team upgraded the lineup in the offseason, they could go out and improve the starting rotation this July.

Kiley McDaniel and Jeff Passan from ESPN wrote that Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Zac Gallen is a fit for the Cubs.

“Gallen was excellent for the past three seasons but now, in a contract year, is posting career-worst numbers in almost every category,” McDaniel and Passan wrote. “His stuff looks pretty similar, but he’s allowing much more damage when hitters make contact. Diamondbacks general manager Mike Hazen said the team does not plan to deal away players at the deadline, but if Arizona doesn’t make a run, it could reap a huge return with all of its impending free agents.”

Gallen, a one-time All-Star in 2023, is in the last year of his $13 million contract.

If the Cubs were to trade for Gallen, it would most likely be a rental, but Chicago needs to go all in this season to try and win the World Series, and Gallen might be the best starting pitcher on the trade market this summer.
