The 2025 Mitch Marner sweepstakes have received a big update. Today, Cam Robinson of Elite Prospects has put out a rumor connecting Marner to the Vegas Golden Knights.
Vegas has been circling a potential deal with the Carolina Hurricanes that would send Tomas Hertl the other way. The 31 year old forward has been an effective piece for the Knights since they acquired him from their division rival San Jose Sharks at the 2024 trade deadline.
Hertl would slot in to a top 6 role on this Carolina Hurricanes squad. That would be another weapon added to their forward core that could help push them over the top come playoff time.
The real kicker to this deal, however, would be what it could open up on the Vegas side. By trading Hertl, that would take his massive $9 million contract off their books. This would free up the cap space necessary for the Knights to go all in on bringing aboard Mitch Marner to the squad as he would likely be looking for a shorter term deal around $14 million a year. Vegas has been in on Mitch heavily leading up to free agency, per sources.
Of course, this is all just smoke and rumblings. Nothing has been confirmed. There are question marks in regards to whether Carolina would be interested in making this deal for a couple reasons. Number 1, they are another team that has been consistently linked to Mitch Marner. Would Tomas Hertl be a suitable consolation prize? And is that a contract the club would be willing to take on?
All these are questions that we will have to wait to see answered. The entire hockey world is brimming in anticipation to see where the 100 point Marner lands this offseason. After all, those types of players don’t hit the open market often.
