When Newcastle United step back into the Champions League next season, they might do so with one of England’s most high-profile names on their books and their wage bill.
Former Manchester City financial advisor Stefan Borson has boldly suggested that the Magpies are among the very few clubs capable of landing Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford, who currently earns £325,000 [$436,000] per week.
“If somebody wants to buy him, Newcastle are in that small group of clubs who could make it work,” Borson told Football Insider.
The numbers are eye-watering, with Rashford’s wages reportedly consuming 8 to 11 percent of Newcastle’s entire wage budget, which translates to nearly £20 million[$26m] per year, excluding the potential £20 million [$26m]transfer fee.
“He would probably be something like 8 percent of their total wage bill,” Borson added. “It might be as much as 11 percent… on one player.”
However, Borson tempers expectations: “It must be unlikely that deal happens. It’s not impossible… There are just not many teams that can do it.

Newcastle, under Eddie Howe, will receive a £100 million [$134m] cash boost from Champions League qualification. But whether they’ll break their pay structure for Rashford remains to be seen.
“Newcastle are definitely on the list,” Borson said. “I just think it’s an unlikely deal given what we know about Newcastle at the moment.”
